SLO and Acupuncture

San Luis Obispo and acupuncture share the idea of a balanced life.  According to Dan Buettner, in his book, “Thrive,” San Luis Obispo is one of the “happiest” places in the world because people take the time to exercise, volunteer, and socialize, besides work. In acupuncture, the goal of any treatment is to assist the body in reestablishing its innate harmony.  Acupuncture is used to open or adjust the flow of “qi,” the vital energy which regulates body functions.

Acupuncture corrects the imbalances in the flow of qi by the stimulation of acu-points located under the skin using thin metal needles, which are manipulated manually or by electrical stimulation.  For a happy place like SLO to “thrive,” the body is respected and listened to.  Pain and such conditions as infertility, arthritis, migraines, low back pain, sciatica, asthma, and fibromyalgia are addressed and can be treated with the use of acupuncture.

Acupuncture is a component of traditional medicine that originated in China over 5,000 years ago.  It is based on the belief that the world and body are made up of five main elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water.  These elements are all interconnected.  Each organ in the human body is associated with one of the five elements.  For instance, the kidney is associated with water and the heart is associated fire.  The acupuncturist determines the patterns of how the organs are relating.  If an imbalance in the flow of qi is detected in one of the twelve invisible lines known as meridians, which connect the organ systems, acupuncture treatment aims to restore the balance.

Acupuncture strengthens body harmony and prompts the body to heal itself, just as the people of SLO get out and harmonize with their enviornment.
